Bokashi Bran

Bran fermented with Effective-Micro-Organisms and Molasses. For use with Bokashi Kitchen Composting Buckets. Also great for feeding chickens (apparently!).

Bokashi Bran Nuggets

A little cheaper but just as good!

Bokashi bran nuggets are a by-product of the production process. To activate the chosen substrate (typically wheat bran, clean untreated sawdust, wood pulp fibre or similar) it is first dampened with water, then the mixture of EM1 activator mixed in warm water with a feed measure of molasses is added and thoroughly mixed (we use an industrial cement mixture amongst other things!).

The now thoroughly uniform mix is packed tight (to remove oxygen) and sealed into airtight containers and left to ferment anaerobically for several weeks. When the natural fermentation process has done its work the containers are opened and the bran dried off as speedily as is practicable.

In sunny weather we simply spread the bran outside on large tarpaulin sheets. However, this is only an option for about 3 months of the year at best. For the rest of the year we use specially modified shelves in our compost bin moulding department to benefit from the drying power of the heat generated by the gas burning rotational moulding machines. So we make the whole process as environmentally neutral as possible.

The final process is to sieve the now dry bran and then bag it up ready for use. Now almost by definition the sieving process separates the small flakes and particles from larger pieces and lumps. These Bokashi nuggets are simply lumps of the bran which have aggregated together in the drying process.

We have a small supply of these nuggets from each new batch of bran we make. Whilst not quite as easy to spread evenly, they do the same job as the finer bran so rather than waste them we are pleased to offer them at 25% off whilst stocks last.

Our fabulous Bokashi Kitchen Composters allow you to compost 100% of your waste when used in conjunction with a traditional Compost Bin or Wormery.

You simply place kitchen waste into the airtight container and sprinkle with a handful of Bokashi (Japanese for 'fermentation'). Bokashi is a bran based material made with a culture of micro-organisms and molasses which begins to ferment the waste allowing you to turn ALL your kitchen waste into nutrient rich compost. This includes meat, fish, dairy products and cooked food.

The Bokashi performs the first stages of decomposition using the active micro-organisms. Then, after a little patience, the contents can be safely transferred from the Bokashi Bucket into a traditional garden compost bin, your Wormery or simply dug into the garden as a soil conditioner and improver where the process will finish itself off..

Like a Wormery, Liquid feed is also captured and can be drained off through the tap at the bottom of the bucket. This liquid is alive with beneficial microbes and, when diluted, is a very nutritious plant feed. It can also be used to prevent algae build-up and odours when poured down the drain.

The process is odourless and doesn't attract flies so the Bokashi Bucket container can be safely kept in the kitchen and used as a kitchen caddy.
