Worm Composting
With a Junior or Original Wormery™
Worm composting is essentially an efficient method of turning ordinary organic kitchen food waste into nutrient rich liquid feed and organic compost.
The Wormery is divided into 2 chambers –the lower sump holds the liquid and the upper chamber the kitchen waste and, of course, the worms.
Unlike Garden Composting it is a cool process and works by the addition of food waste on the little and often basis – which is how most households produce it.
It produces a much nutrient richer end product(s) than a garden composter primarily because it is concentrating the goodness of food produced for human consumption.
In the early days after set up it is vulnerable to extreme temperatures – full midday sun or severe frost. As the Wormery fills it effectively self insulates against most normal temperature fluctuations.
Advantages
- The worms do all the work – they can only eat dead organic matter and are native to the UK – they can process (eat) their own weight in waste every 24 hours!
- A wormery can efficiently deal with waste unsuitable for a garden composter including cooked food and meat waste.
- It works well all year round.
- A sealed unit - No smell or mess.
- Simple and easy to use.
- Excellent end products.
- Can be located indoors (e.g. utility room) or outside (close to the house / kitchen)
- Lasts for years and all being well the colony of worms will reproduce to optimum levels and self sustain.
- Excellent for the environment.
- Saves you £££’s on purchased feeds and compost.
- Comes with simple clear yet comprehensive instructions and guidance notes.
- Educational and fascinating – Children are interested and enthralled - we sell many hundreds to schools, colleges and other educational establishments – which use them for both environmental and educational benefits.
- Independently proven and acclaimed by gardening experts.
Potential limitations
- It won’t deal with bulk garden waste such as grass mowings – they would generate too much heat for the worms comfort! – for garden waste a compost bin is better – and dare I say ours are without doubt the very best!
- It takes just a little bit more care and attention than a garden composter to ensure success.
- In the unlikely event that something goes wrong and the worms don’t thrive and you miss the signs you could (unless you called our help line in time) at worst have a smelly waterlogged mess to sort out. – but even a messy failed wormery can readily be restored to excellent status with a little advice and help!
