the home of the wormery
Turn your cooked and uncooked kitchen food waste into a nutritious organic plant feed and a rich "black gold" compost.
"I have had my wormery for 6 weeks. The first working tray is just about full and I am soon to add the second. The worms are evidently enjoying it as they are active in the new food... they seem to be breeding too, as I have noticed quite a few very small ones in the compost. Mr Davidson, October 2007, The Worm Works User |
How does The Worm Works work?
The Worm Works Stacking Tray Wormery operates simply. There are three trays. You place the worms (included!) in the bottom tray along with some food scraps which the worms eat. Once they have finished that food they move by themselves up to the next tray into which you have put food and the first tray is now ready to use as compost. You simply keep the system going and the liquid fertilizer gathers in a chamber at the bottom where there is a tap to drain it into your watering can.
The Worm Works is constructed from high quality, 100% recycled plastic, with a 5 year warranty on materials and workmanship. It is available in Black, or Terracotta (both with a Black lid / tap). It is very simple to assemble and can be stored inside or out.
The Worm Works requires only a little effort - perhaps 15 minutes a week. It will even look after itself while you go on holiday. The Worm Works makes for a fantastic present for Christmas or Birthdays. Find out here why The Worm Works is better than other Stacking Tray Wormeries.

Why is the Worm Works better than other multi-tray worm composters?
1) Specifically and Purposely Designed and Built for Worms!
The Worm Works is purpose designed and manufactured specifically for Worm Composting. Many other stacking wormeries available on the market are made by hobbyists out of plastic boxes or crates that were designed to be storage boxes, with some holes drilled into them. Increasing the risk of Worms escaping and fly infestations occuring.
2) Stable Stand for Stable Worms!
The Worm Works is an extremely stable Wormery with a specially fitted, integrated stand. Some other multi-tray Worm Composters are on legs which make it easier to topple over, or buckle under weight. With a potential 100 litres of waste being supported - it's very important for the Wormery to be stable!
3) Trays rest on the compost below, not each other!
The trays of The Worm Works rest on the compost in the tray below (with the exception of the first tray) rather than on each other. Why? Well, because as the waste breaks down and the worms munch through it - the compost compacts down. If you've started adding waste to the next tray, the worms will need to migrate up. Worms can't jump! But with the next tray up always resting on the compost itself, the worms can freely move upto the next tray with ease.
4) Comprehensive Help & Support
The Worm Works Wormery is supplied with a comprehensive, illustrated guide and even has hints and tips printed on its lid for ease of use.
What is Worm Composting?
Worm Composting is the easy, efficient process of converting ordinary kitchen food waste into liquid feed and rich organic compost through the natural action of worms.
What can I put in The Worm Works?
Ordinary kitchen waste such as peelings, cooked and uncooked scraps, teabags, eggshells, paper kitchen towels, even shredded newspaper etc. In fact virtually any organic kitchen waste can go in. For convenience and ease of use, the lid is printed with further information about what you can and can't put in.
What do I get out?
A strong, nutrient rich liquid feed which you dilute with water prior to use as an excellent plant food for house plants, garden flowers, shrubs, vegetables or as a lawn feed, and a rich organic compost, commonly known by gardeners as "Black Gold".
Why Worms?
Nature has provided us with the perfect waste desposal unit in the worm, and Tiger Worms are simply the most efficient at dealing with organic waste. They live their whole lives in the dark, moist atmosphere of The Worm Works; eating the waste material you put in and converting it into liquid feed and compost. The worms are native to the UK and occur naturally outdoors wherever there is organic waste such as an old compost heap. All we have done is harness their abilities more efficiently by producing the ideal environment for them to work in.
Does it smell?
Not at all. As the waste material you put in starts to decompose in the Wormery, it is consumed by the worms thereby effectively eliminating the possibility of odour.
Where is The Worm Works made?
The Worm Works is manufactured in and imported from the US, it is not directly manufactured by us. However, we do think that it is the best Multi-Tray Wormery available - and that is why we are willing to endorse it with our name and retail it.
How many Worms are included?
The short answer is plenty! As the inventors of the Wormery we, in all modesty, think we know quite a little about their needs, features, designs, processes and their optimum running conditions – maybe even that bit more than many others!
That’s why we supply our Wormeries with a plentiful initial stock of Tiger Worms (Eisenia Fetida) in pristine breeding condition. After lengthy research and trials by ourselves and others (The Open University) these have proven to be noticeably the best native species of worm for use in a Wormery and in over 20 years of using them, they continue to be our species of choice. They breed exceptionally well and are more tolerant of a wider temperature and moisture range than their close cousins Dendrobaena which seem to be preferred by our competitors (probably because of their wider availability and lower cost - due to their use a bait by anglers). When it comes to worms only the best will do, so don’t settle for second best.
The Worm Works vs The Original Wormery - which Wormery should I buy?
It really is all about personal preference! Both Wormeries do the same job - and both do the job very well. We invented the first incarnation of The Original Wormery nearly 20 year ago and have sold units in the multiple hundreds of thousands. It has evolved and improved over time and we think it is the best Worm Composter available on the market.
The main difference between The Worms Works and The Original Wormery is that The Original Wormery is emptied only when full - and the Worms then reused. The Worm Works is an ongoing process whereby you take a tray of compost as it is ready, store the compost and pop the tray back on top for the Worms to migrate up into.
Some people prefer the convenience of a multi-tray system as removing the compost is simply a case of unstacking the tray. Some people also think they look nicer. This is where The Worm Works is ideal.
