Little Owl Nest Box
We have designed this nesting box to be lightweight yet durable, with recycled plastic hanging and fixing plates. Additionally, the box comes fitted with a camera clip so you can monitor the Little Owls and their young as they grow.
When siting the Little Owl nest box, it is important to consider the natural habitat of these birds. They are traditionally found in farmland, orchards, or smallholdings with mixed land, outbuildings, cowsheds, and barns. In the wild, they will often use rabbit burrows, old buildings, or natural holes in trees as nesting sites. Ideally, the box should be placed between the ground and no more than 2.5 metres high, and preferably out of reach of domestic cats. Suitable locations include woodland or orchard trees, hedgerows, or buildings, with an ideal orientation facing East/North East or South East.
The availability of prey species is also crucial for the success of the Little Owl nesting box. Little Owls feed on small mammals and invertebrates, such as beetles, grasshoppers, moths, and small birds. These can be found in meadows rich in invertebrates, piles of rotting wood or compost heaps, and muck piles.
Finally, to ensure the longevity of the Little Owl nest box, regular monitoring and inspection are necessary. Early breeding means that the box can be cleaned from September to January using an environmentally friendly cleaning product like Wildkleen to disinfect the box and keep it hygienic for the Little Owls and their young.
